We woke up on sunday morning and the rain was gone. Great day for a canoe tour – we thought. The sky looked “a bit grey” but the weather report indicated a bigger than 50% chance that it would stay dry. The picture below shows what you get for believing in the weather report. The T-Shirt was not the only thing getting wet. As the video I took using the GoPro is is bit too large for uploading, using the limited bandwidth provided on the campground, but it will follow later.
We decided to continue our journey further south and visit the island of Öland. Driving on straight roads through never ending forests is really amazing and so much different from the densely populated Switzerland we live in. Swedes are proud of their country and the happy camper in front of us did everything to show this. Distance is another thing up here. From Tiveden to Öland is about 480 kms mostly on secondary roads. This is almost like crossing Switzerland from east to west.
We reached Öland after some heavy rainstorms on the way and found that the campground we had initially selected was not attractive at all. One motorhome next to the other and each one bigger than its neighbor. Why do people drive all the way up here if the keep sitting in their mobile living room all day anyway? What fun is camping with Satellite TV, 2 bath rooms, air condition and Dolby Surround?
Driving almost to the northern tip of the island we finally found a campground right on the beach and close to a little harbor. The campground even offered a “dogs beach”.
Looking at the weather forecast we’re not sure how long we’ll stay. As the temperatures keep going down at the same rate as the number of thunderstorms keep going up, we might as well head further south on Wednesday.
